Life, Stories

Call Me Mrs.

This afternoon, I married my best friend.

For those of you who have followed our story, you may be a little confused, as our wedding is not until March. Before I elaborate, let me clear a couple of things up: first, I am not pregnant, and do not plan on becoming pregnant anytime soon. 😉 Second, there will still be a wedding in March, and I’m so excited for it!

Now that that is out of the way, allow me to explain. Several months ago, before Samajé declared for the NFL Draft and I started my final semester of college, we began meeting with our pastor to discuss the future of our relationship. We knew we wanted to get married, and we knew we wanted to be together wherever life would take us. Unfortunately, though, the timing of it all did not line up in the way we would like.

We began to straighten out our vision for our future and decided we would move together wherever God took us after the draft. That left us with a problem. At the time, Maj had not yet proposed, and I was still in college. I, of course, wanted a big wedding with all of our friends and family, but we did not have the time or the money to make it happen before we planned on getting a place together.

At this point, our pastor simply suggested we get married prior to moving to our new destination. After all, we knew we would be getting married not long after, and doing it sooner would allow us to truly approach our new life together as one. We welcomed this idea, for we realized we could still have our big wedding at a later point in time while also doing things God’s way.

Once we got engaged, the wedding talk began, and things began to sort themselves out. The closer we got to the draft, the more we felt drawn to the idea of beginning our new life with God’s full blessing. In the midst of planning our larger wedding celebration, we also planned our more intimate wedding before God.

So this afternoon, in front of our pastor, his wife, and another member of our church family, we said our vows and became one. Tonight we will have a small dinner to celebrate. Next week I will begin the process of changing my name, and one week from today we close on our first house!

As for our March ceremony, while it will not carry the weight of a typical wedding, it will still be a day for Maj and I to celebrate our relationship with those we love. Until then, I will be enjoying life with my husband. 🙂

Amen and may the Lord bless you both and your relationship beyond description! I so admire you both for your approach to life, as the Godly people you are, but as the Godly people you strive to be! Thank you for the example you are for all of those who see and hear about you, as this is something greatly lacking in the world we live in today. Congratulations on your marriage!!!

“For wherever two or more of you are gathered in His name, there is Love!”

  31. Meg Haney, I mean Perine, you rock! God’s timing is perfect, and you definitely have superb listening skills. You may never know the folks you’ve edified through your witness, but He will. Powerful!

  32. B. Stokes says:

I am incredibly amazed and inspired by you two! Your commitment to Christ and to each other is something you both seem to take great pride in and it shows. I’ve always felt like Samaje was a special kind of person (off the field) and your stories continue to validate that opinion. It appears he has had the fortune to meet another “special kind of person” in you Meg. My youngest son is 17 and he looks at Samaje as a hero. I just want you and Samaje to know how incredibly thankful I am that you both are great people, excellent ambassadors of the university and Christians grounded in your deep faith. God has big plans for you both and it’s not just on the football field. Thank you for sharing your life through this blog. I wish you both the absolute best!
